Ever since its humble beginning in India nearly a couple of decades ago as a manufacturer of small family hatchbacks, Hyundai has been growing steadily, both as a brand and in terms of sales. The immensely gratifying response Hyundai Creta received (30,000 bookings in less than a month from launch) should have given the South Korean automaker enough confidence to make yet another ambitious move – to go truly premium and launch Hyundai Genesis.
If a recent media report is anything to go by, Hyundai India is planning to introduce the luxury sedan in the country in mid-2016. The sedan which rivals the likes of Mercedes C Class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, etc., in the international markets had already been showcased in India last year and was spotted on public roads a few times thereafter.
The premium sedan is available with a choice of four direct injection petrol motors, the smallest of which is a 257 PS V6 unit displacing 3.0-litre. Other engines in the lineup include a 282 PS 3.3-litre V6, a 315 PS 3.8-litre V8 and a range-topping 425 PS 5.0-litre V8. It’s unclear as to which of these motors would make it to India if at all the car is launched here. A diesel variant, exclusive for India, can’t be ruled out given its importance in our market but it’s a little too early to say with absolute certainty.
Since Hyundai Genesis is much more premium and expensive than any of the other products sold by the company in India, possibility of a dedicated premium retail chain for the sedan is rich. Hyundai India is reported to make a final decision on exclusive upmarket dealerships by October 2015.
Going by its positioning in the international markets, Genesis is likely to have its price range in the ball park of its primary rivals, i.e. somewhere between INR 35-45 lakhs (ex-showroom).
