Hyundai i10 production comes to an end in India – Last unit rolled out

First launched in India in October 2007, the i10 succeeded the Hyundai Atos. Soon, i10 became Hyundai’s best selling car in the country. In Feb 2015 the company revealed that i10 global sales have crossed 2 million mark. And, of the 2 million (20 lakh) i10 produced, Hyundai has produced 1.89 million (18.9 lakh) units at their plant in Chennai, India.

But now, in order to make way for newer cars, Hyundai has pulled the plug on the i10 from India as well. The last unit rolled off the production facelift in Chennai, and it was a Black coloured i10.

Built on the ethos of Hyundai’s Santro, i10 was an instant hit due to its size, price, fuel efficient range of engines, modern interior, compact footprint and design. It is from India, that the Hyundai i10 was exported to various countries in Europe. Export of Hyundai i10 to Europe stopped in late 2013, once the new i10 was launched. For Europe, the new i10 was being manufactured at Hyundai’s plant in Turkey.

It was only after the launch of new gen i10 in 2013, that Hyundai Turkey plant also started manufacturing the i10 for Europe. Since 2013, Hyundai has sold 119,631 units of i10 in Europe. Another interesting fact to note here is that the Grand i10 in India, is in fact the new gen i10 in Europe. Only in India, Hyundai had kept the old i10 in circulation, as it garnered about 2500-3000 units of monthly sales. Also, the Grand i10 in India, is a little different as compared to the i10 in Europe.

The second-generation model called Grand i10 was launched in August 2013. This model is 80mm longer, 50mm shorter and 65mm wider than the older model while boot space is also at a premium standing at 252 liters. It was named as 2014 Indian Car of the Year. It boasts of a contemporary dual toned interior with use of quality material. It also offers better comfort for rear passengers with rear AC vents and a 12V charging socket at the back below the vents.

Replacing the now discontinued Hyundai i10 will be the new generation Santro, which is currently being developed at the company R&D facelift in South Korea. It will be launched in 2018, where it will be better equipped to rival the likes of Renaule Kwid, who has taken the entry level market by storm.
