What was thought to be Hyundai i20 Cross, is in fact Hyundai i20 Active. The first un-camouflaged spy shot of the new pseudo-SUV from Hyundai, based on the new Elite i20, confirms that it will be called i20 Active.
Hyundai i20 Active spied here, is a diesel variant. From the spy shot, exciting new details about the rear of new Hyundai i20 Active is revealed. The new i20 variant will receive a revised bumper at the rear, with circular reflectors, more sharper roof spoiler, roof railings, i20 Active badge, plastic claddings, and sliver skid plates.
Apart from these, the i20 Active will also be seen in new exterior colours (the one in the spy shot above is new, it is not on offer with Elite i20). The ground clearance is also raced considerably, and is easily evident in the spy shot. (Elite i20 has 170 mm ground clearance, expect the GC of i20 Active to be in the range of 200 mm).
Speaking about the changes in the front, Hyundai i20 Active gets projector headlamps, LED DRLs, round fog lights, silver skid plates, plastic cladding, five slat grille (instead honeycomb grill as seen on Elite i20), and the shape of the grille is also different (exactly opposite structure as compared to i20’s grille, probably to give the car a muscular look).
To be offered in a choice of petrol and diesel engine options, Hyundai i20 Active is expected to be launched in India on 9th March 2015. This will also be the car’s global launch. Speaking about engines, they will be same as the one’s seen on Elite i20 – 1.2l Kappa Dual VTVT petrol engine mated to 5 speed MT and 1.4L U2 CRDi diesel engine mated to 6 speed MT.

Though it is yet not clear whether the output of these engines will be same as that on i20, we can confirm that the will be considerably different in driving. At the national media drive of new Verna earlier this month, Hyundai India officials confirmed that the i20 Active will be very different to drive.
Aboard the new Elite i20, the petrol engine delivers 83 PS power @ 6000 rpm and 115 Nm torque @ 4000 rpm. The diesel engine delivers 90 PS power at 4000 rpm and 220 Nm torque at 1500 – 2750 rpm. Mileage claimed is about 18 kmpl and 22 kmpl respectively.
Spotted over a dozen times, the new Hyundai i20 crossover will compete with the likes of Volkswagen Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross and Fiat Avventura once launched. Price is expected to range between Rs 6-9 lakhs.
A big thank you to Abhijeet More, who managed to click all the images of i20 Active, shared in the post here. He spotted the car (both petrol and diesel variants), while they were in his office campus earlier today in Bangalore, for a pre-launch TVC shoot.
