Hyundai ix25 and Maruti Across (a.k.a. Suzuki S-Cross) are slated for launch in India this year, to occupy the lucrative compact crossover C-segment dominated by Renault Duster. Both models from two of the nation’s largest carmakers, apart from competing with each other and the French crossover, will also take an aim at other SUVs in the price range, including Mahindra XUV500, Tata Safari Storme facelift and the like. Both could potentially hurt sales of Ford EcoSport as well, albeit being positioned in a slightly lower segment.
Hyundai ix25, codename GS in India, is expected to be noticeably different from the model selling in China, same goes for Maruti Across. ix25 was launched in Chinese market in October, 2014, and Suzuki S-Cross has been on sale there since 2013. Both are priced at over Rs. 11 lakh equivalent in China, but in India starting prices would hopefully be lower than Rs. 10 lakh mark, as both will be manufactured locally.
Equipment levels / features on both Hyundai ix25 and Maruti Across would be same, but it is highly likely that the South Korean model will be touted as a more premium product, even in terms of pricing. Expect Maruti Across to launch first, in May, and Hyundai ix25 around September, 2015.
Speaking about engine options, Hyundai will power the ix25 with both 1.4 and 1.6l diesel engine options, while Maruti will give Across a Fiat sourced 1.6l diesel engine option. Maruti is not expected to offer a petrol option aboard the new ACross, while IX25 will get a 1.6l petrol mill, same which is seen on existing Verna sedan.
Once launched, both ix25 and Across will rival the likes of Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and Mahindra XUV500.
