In just 10 days since launch, Hyundai India has recorded 120 booking orders for the Kona electric SUV. This is a commendable number for an all electric car, which costs Rs 25.3 lakh, ex-sh. With an average of 12 bookings per day, these numbers show that electric cars do have potential in India as well.

Hyundai Kona is brought in as a Completely Knocked Down Unit and will be assembled locally at the company plant in Chennai. Commenting on the Hyundai KONA Electric bookings, Mr. Vikas Jain, National Sales Head, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. said, “We have received an electrifying response to India’s First Long Range Green SUV – KONA Electric with 120 Confirmed Bookings in just 10 days of its launch expressing the Indian customers’ acceptance to high end future technologies offered by Hyundai.

The digital enquires and footfall at our dealerships have increased as the customers are excited to experience Electric cars. The change of perception and adaptability is clearly visible as there is huge interest and request for test drives.”

Kona Electric in India comes in with a lithium ion battery which is ARAI rated at 452 kmph on a single charge. The battery powered electric motor offers the equivalent of 136 hp power and 395 Nm torque. It allows for acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in 9.7 seconds with a top speed of 167 kmph. It is these impressive performance and mileage numbers which has given buyers confidence in electric cars.

In terms of design, the Kona EV bears a strong similarity to its conventionally powered counterpart. However, it does do away with the front grille and in its place is a closed off section with a charging port located in the front. Other features include 17” alloy wheels, automatic LED head and tail lamps, plastic body cladding and roof rails.

Kona EV, being positioned on a 2,600mm long wheelbase, finds its battery back positioned on the floorboard. Ride height is also increased for better performance on Indian road conditions. Exterior colour options include white, black, silver and blue and a dual tone colour scheme in black and white which is priced at a premium of Rs.20,000 over the single tone variants.

The interiors of Hyundai Kona EV receive heated and ventilated seating with 10 way electrically adjustable front seats. It also gets a powered sunroof, heated wing mirrors, leather seating and steering wheel. Infotainment is via a 7.0” digital dashboard with head up display and an 8.0” touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The display works to change drive modes and manage EV settings and also get information on power consumption. Safety is via 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, electronic parking brake, traction control, hill start, rear parking sensors and rear camera along with tyre pressure monitoring system, ISOFIX child seat mounts and rear defogger.

Hyundai Kona EV’s lithium ion battery can be charged via a 50 kW DC fast charger in a matter of 57 minutes upto 100 percent or in 6 hours via a standard AC charging system. This home charger is also provided with the EV while Hyundai is also installing charging stations at company dealerships. The Kona electric comes in with a 3 year/unlimited warranty as standard and an 8 year/1.6 lakh km warranty for the battery.
