New Hyundai Kona makes global debut – Photos and Video

Hyundai Kona is a premium compact crossover which stands at 4.16 meters in length, about 100 mm smaller than Creta.

Much awaited Hyundai Kona compact SUV has made its global debut. A global car, the new Hyundai Kona will first be launched in the South Korean market, post which it will head to Europe later this year, and then to the US and other countries in 2018.

Speaking about the design, the car gets a crossover’ish design. Noticeable features up front are the sleek LEDs above the headlights, the traditional Hyundai grille, twin foglamps below the grille. From the side, you can notice machined 17/18 inch alloys with low profile tyres, muscular wheel arches with plastic cladding, large windows, sloping roofline. At the rear is a floating spoiler, twin taillight setup, and turn indicators encased in plastic cladding.

Hyundai says that – “With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled lifestyles. We aim to set new standards for the compact SUV segment, with appealing design, cutting-edge connectivity and class leading safety features.”

New Hyundai Kona is based on the same platform as the upcoming Kia Stonic. Speaking about dimensions, it is 4,165mm long, 1,800mm wide, 1,550mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,600mm. This when compared to Hyundai Creta sold in India, is shorter by 105 mm, narrower by 20 mm, has a smaller height by 120 mm and has a 10 mm longer wheelbase.

With dimensions similar to that of Creta, it is more or less certain that the Kona will not be coming to India, or to all those markets where the Creta is on sale. It seems like Creta is for developing markets like India, Brazil, etc, while the new Kona is for the developed markets like Europe, and the US.

Engine options on offer with Kona is a 2.0 liter petrol 4 cylinder engine generating 149 PS and 179 Nm. This engine is mated to a 6 speed auto delivering 0-100 kmph time of 10 seconds and a top speed of 194 kmph. There is also a 1.6 liter turbocharged four cylinder petrol option on offer. This delivers 177 PS and 265 Nm torque. Mated to a 7 speed DCT, it has a top speed of 210 kmph and does a 0-100 kmph dash in just 7.7 seconds.

For the fuel conscious buyers, there is a 1,0 liter three cylinder petrol turbo-ed option which delivers 120 PS and 172 Nm. Mated to a 6 speed auto, it has a top speed of 180 kmph and does 0-100 kmph in 12 seconds. There is also the option of 1.6 liter diesel 4 cyl for European market.

The new Hyundai Kona is equipped with an extensive array of driver assistance systems including Autonomous Emergency Braking system, Lane Keeping Assist, adaptive cruise control, blindspot detection and so on. It also gets multimedia infotainment system to be compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Globally, the new South Korean crossover would be pitted against the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Jeep Renegade, Fiat 500X, etc.
