Hyundai MPV (Ertiga-rival) project relegated to back burner

Hyundai MPV put on hold

The slowing MPV market and burgeoning SUV market has prompted Hyundai to change its strategy.

According to Autocar India’s sources, the Hyundai MPV project which was previewed by the Hexa concept at 2012 Auto Expo has been put on hold in a bid to shift focus on the sub-4 compact crossover SUV which was previewed by the Carlino concept at this year’s Auto Expo.

Hyundai India revealed its intent of developing a Maruti Ertiga rival when the compact crossover MPVs seemed to be in vogue but in the present scenario, MPVs are clearly not highly sought-after like before. This is evident from the plummeting sales of the Honda Mobilio and Renault Lodgy. In fact, the market leading Ertiga too is being affected by the change in trend towards the SUVs.

The Hyundai Carlino SUV would be catering to the sub-4m crossover market which is showing immense potential in India.

Hyundai India itself is one of the biggest gainers of this trend as the Creta took the SUV market by storm. The car’s bookings have surpassed 100,000 mark and are still going on strongly.

Not much about the production version of the Carlino is known as of now but it will be a sub-4 m product which targets the Ford EcoSport, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Mahindra TUV300. One can safely assume that the product will be heavily localized like the Creta.

The Carlino will be positioned under the highly successful Creta.

The Hyundai Carlino prototypes are yet to be spotted testing and this indicates that the development work has not reached the road testing phase yet. We expect the crossover SUV to be ready by the end of 2017 or early 2018.
