Tata Tiago sales lower than Hyundai Santro, Renault Kwid – Dec 2018

All new Hyundai Santro has beaten rivals Maruti WagonR, Tata Tiago and Renault Kwid for the month of Dec 2018. No, it did not manage huge sales, in fact compared to previous months, sales of Santro have declined. And so has sales of rival cars.

Sales of Hyundai Santro stood at 7,197 units. Tata Tiago registered its lowest monthly sales at 5,628 units and so did Maruti WagonR at 2,540 units. Renault Kwid sales for Dec 2018 stood at 5,832 units (higher than Tata Tiago) while Maruti Celerio topped the segment with 9,000 unit sales.

Usually, it is Maruti WagonR, which is the topper in this segment with an average sales of 18k to 20k units. But Dec 2018 saw production of current WagonR stop. As it will soon be discontinued. New WagonR production has started in place of old WagonR. 2019 WagonR will launch on 23rd Jan in India. Thanks to this, Hyundai has in a way managed to beat Maruti WagonR in sales. It will be interesting to see how new Santro performs post the launch of new WagonR.

Hyundai Santro is the most feature rich car in its segment. To counter this, Tata launched a new top end variant of Tiago last month, called XZ+. This new variant is now offered larger 15 inch machine cut alloys, touchscreen infotainment, dual colour option, projector headlamps, Auto AC, etc. The Santro however, misses out on LED DRLs and projector headlamps. It does get a touchscreen infotainment.

New WagonR vs rivals.

New Maruti WagonR is all set to shake-up the segment. It not only gets a new platform, but also gets a new engine. It will continue with the 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine, but will also get 1.2 liter 4 cylinder engine from Swift. With the kerb weight reduced by 65 kgs, performance and mileage are reported to have been improved drastically.

Dec 2018 saw sales of almost all cars decline. There was a huge change in the top 10 car sales list as well. Cumulative sales of top 10 cars declined by 16% when compared to top 10 cars cumulative sales total of Nov 2018.
