Hyundai Motors India has officially launched the new Santro in India. The car which was first launched in 1998, and then was discontinued in 2014 – has been relaunched today as a new-generation car. To take on the Maruti WagonR and the Tata Tiago in India, new Santro prices start from Rs 3.9 lakhs for the base variant and goes all the way to Rs 5.65 lakhs for the top end variant. 2018 Hyundai Santro, is an entry level hatchback positioned between the Eon and Grand i10 in the company line-up. It is offered in four variants of Era, Magna, Asta and Sportz. Built and developed at the company’s research centers in Hyderabad and Korea, at an investment of $100 million (Rs 730 crores) over a period of 3 years, the new Santro comes in with several segment first features. It is the most silent car in the segment, as well as the one with most powerful AC.
Just like the original Santro, the new Santro continues to sport the same tall boy stance. It boasts of the Hyundai Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. It is seen with Hyundai’s signature cascading grille with chrome accents, new fog lamps and large swept back headlamps. The bonnet sports a bold design with strong character lines and the Hyundai logo. The rear receives rear parking camera and two parking sensors right in the middle of the bumper, wrap around tail lamps and the Hyundai logo in the centre of the boot-lid. Other exterior features include ORVMs with electrical adjustment, remote keyless entry, front and rear power windows and rear wiper with washer and defogger.
In terms of dimensions, the Hyundai Santro measures 3,610 mm in length, 1,645 mm in width and 1,560 mm in height. It gets wheelbase of 2,400 mm while the ground clearance stands at 160 mm. This means that the Santro is bigger in dimensions than the Maruti WagonR, but is smaller than Tiago. The Santro allows for easy ingress and egress and allows the new Santro to command a dominating road presence. Trunk space is of 235 liters making the new Santro ideal for outstation travel.
Interiors get features depending on trim level, of which some are first in segment features. The Sportz and Asta models receive a segment first 7” touchscreen audio video infotainment system with Bluetooth, MirrorLink and inbuilt navigation along with first in class smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Rear AC vents are also a segment first feature. Interiors are in a dual color scheme of black and beige while comfortable seating also offers superior thigh support.
In terms of safety the Hyundai Santro with its body structure made up of 63% Advanced High Strength Steel – AHSS and High Strength Steel – HSS, gets driver airbags, ABS, EBD across all variants while higher variants get dual airbags. The Hyundai Santro also gets impact sensing auto door unlock, speed sensing auto door lock and seat belt pre-tensioners with load limiter.
Hyundai has presented the 2018 Santro hatchback with a 1.1 liter, 4 cylinder petrol engine offering 68 bhp power and 99 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. It also gets an AMT gearbox option and a factory fitted CNG option. On board the CNG option, engine delivers 59 bhp power. Mileage for petrol variant stands at 20.3 kmpl while that for CNG option stands at 30.5 kms per kg. The car comes with 3 yrs / 100,000 kms warranty.
