2018 Hyundai Santro vs Maruti Celerio vs Renault Kwid – Engine, mileage comparison

Hyundai Motors India brings back the Santro hatchback to India coinciding with Hyundai’s completion of two decades of operations. With sales set to commence from later this month, the Hyundai Santro will have to find its place in a segment currently dominated by Maruti WagonR, Tata Tiago, Maruti Celerio and the Renault Kwid.

In the earlier post, we compared the new Santro with WagonR and Tiago. In this post we will compare the Santro with Celerio and Kwid. With questions in buyer’s minds over the decision to buy a Hyundai Santro, Maruti Suzuki Celerio or the Renault Kwid, the following comparison on engine specifications should help you make a decision on which is the best small car in India.

Hyundai Santro – The new Santro will be powered by a 1.1 liter, 4 cylinder Epsilon family petrol engine offering 69 PS power at 5,500 rpm and 99 Nm torque at 4,500 rpm. This engine will be mated to a 5 speed manual or an AMT gearbox with both offering mileage of 20.3 kmpl. Hyundai Motors India will also be offering factory fitted CNG engine with an 8 kg capacity tank offering 59 PS power and 84 Nm torque offering mileage of 30.5 km/kg.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio – Offered in petrol and CNG options, the petrol engine on the Celerio hatchback is a 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder K10B engine, offering 67bhp power at 6,000 rpm and 90 Nm torque at 3,500 rpm. The engine gets mated to a 5 speed manual or AMT gearbox sending power to front wheels.

The CNG model gets the same 1.0 liter petrol engine with a CNG kit offering 57 bhp power at 6,000 rpm and 77 Nm torque at 3,500 rpm with power transferred to front wheels via a 5 speed manual gearbox. Mileage in city limits stands at 23 kmpl while the engine offers a top speed of 150 kmph. CNG mileage stands at 31.79 km/kg.

Renault Kwid – There are two petrol engine options on the Renault Kwid that include 0.8 liter and 1.0 liter petrol engines. The 0.8 liter petrol engine offers 54 bhp power and 72 Nm torque while the 1.0 liter is capable of 68 bhp power and 99 Nm torque. Both engines get mated to manual transmission while the 1 liter variant also get AMT option. The Kwid’s 1 liter engine delivers mileage of 23 kmpl with manual gearbox and with AMT it delivers 24 kmpl.
