Hyundai Motors India is set to launch the new Santro tall boy hatchback in India on October 23. The car is now open for bookings across India. Dealers too have started getting the test drive and display cars. As per the leaked pricing, 2018 Hyundai Santro prices will start from Rs 3.87 lakhs, ex-showroom.
New Santro will be offered in five variants – Dlite, Era, Magna, Sportz and Asta. It will be offered in a total of 5 petrol transmission variants, 2 AMT and 2 CNG variants. Three variants – Dlite, Era and Asta will get petrol/MT engine combinations. Magna and Sportz on the other hand will get CNG/MT and Petrol/MT powertrain options while there is no diesel engine variant announced as on date.
In its new format, the Hyundai Santro will be more appealing with a curvier exterior makeup with distinctive accent lines. It will sport a fluidic design on its front grille, swept back headlamps and high placed fog lamps. It will also receive a wider boot lid, larger windscreen and new tail lamps at the rear. The Santro will sit on bigger 14” wheels but no alloy wheels will be offered on any variant.
Interiors will be seen in several segment first features among which will be a 6.5” touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It will also get rear AC vents on top end variants while in terms of security, the new Santro will get driver side airbags and ABS across all variants so as to comply with new BNVSAP norms coming into effect from April 2019. New Hyundai Santro is positioned on a platform that uses 63% high strength steel and pillars made of ultra high strength steel. Dimensions are also increased marginally as compared to its earlier counterpart and length is now 3,610mm, 45mm longer while increased wheelbase ensures better interior space.
Hyundai wishes to re-capture the entry level hatchback segment and is hence expected to offer the new Santro at prices that range from Rs 3.87 lakhs to Rs 5.35 lakhs. It will get its power via a 1.1 liter petrol engine offering 68 bhp power and 99 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed gearbox while Hyundai will also offer an AMT again as a segment first feature. Mileage is set to stand at 20.3 kmpl. In terms of competition the Hyundai Santro will have to compete with the Maruti WagonR and Celerio, Tata Tiago and Renault Kwid.
