Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis, which is all set to make India debut this year, has taken a decisive step into the world of extreme off-road vehicles with the global debut of the Genesis X Skorpio Concept in the Rub’ al Khali “Empty Quarter” desert of the United Arab Emirates. Revealed at Liwa Oasis, the X Skorpio Concept marks the luxury marque’s first purpose-built off-road concept, engineered to perform in some of the world’s harshest terrain while retaining Genesis’ signature design-led approach.
The unveiling was accompanied by a live demonstration of the vehicle’s real-world desert-driving capability and the announcement of a new concept car strategy, underscoring Genesis’ intent to deepen emotional connections with customers through bold, expressive and lifestyle-focused concept vehicles.
An extreme off-road first for Genesis
Inspired by the resilience and agility of a black scorpion, the X Skorpio Concept represents a dramatic expansion of Genesis’ design and engineering scope. Designed as an extreme off-road recreational vehicle, it blends motorsport-grade hardware with luxury craftsmanship, aimed at enthusiasts who demand both performance and refinement.
Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer at Genesis, described the X Skorpio Concept as an exploration of a new emotional territory for the brand. He noted that the vehicle uses a tubular frame, full roll cage and components sourced from off-road endurance racing specialists, highlighting Genesis’ intent to inject adrenaline and emotion into new segments without abandoning its luxury roots.
Design inspired by nature and purpose
The exterior design draws directly from the form of a black scorpion. Tension-filled curves and segmented, armor-like body panels evoke a scorpion’s exoskeleton while also serving a functional purpose, enabling quicker repairs in extreme environments. The arched silhouette, short overhangs and poised stance reflect readiness and balance, much like a scorpion preparing to strike.
Genesis’ signature Two-Line lighting design is fully integrated into the front and rear lamps, ensuring brand identity remains intact even in this radically different format. A functional roof-mounted air intake and high-clearance bodywork reinforce the vehicle’s desert-focused mission.
A luxury-first off-road cabin
Inside, the X Skorpio Concept departs sharply from the stripped-back interiors typical of trophy trucks. Genesis has focused on driver endurance, comfort and situational awareness—critical factors in demanding off-road environments.
Key highlights include an instrument cluster integrated into the steering wheel, allowing drivers to monitor vital information without taking their eyes off the terrain. A sliding display system can shift between a driver-focused position and a passenger-oriented layout for co-driver navigation. Ergonomic seating, prominent grab handles, climate control and advanced communication systems further enhance usability during intense off-road driving.
Materials and colours mirror the vehicle’s exterior inspiration. A deep black and blue-toned palette is paired with suede and leather featuring laser-cut gradient patterns and stitching inspired by a scorpion’s segmented anatomy. Matte and gloss finishes are combined to convey both strength and agility.
Built for extreme conditions
At the heart of the X Skorpio Concept is a high-performance V8 engine producing 1,115 PS (1,100 hp) and 850 lb-ft (117.6 kgf m) of torque, setting a new benchmark for off-road concepts from a luxury brand. Power is managed through a motorsport-grade setup that includes 18-inch beadlock wheels, custom 40-inch off-road tyres and Brembo Motorsport brakes.
A short wheelbase, extreme ground clearance, generous approach and departure angles, and a finely tuned suspension system allow the vehicle to tackle dunes, jumps and uneven terrain with confidence. High-clearance fenders, reinforced skid plates and precision-engineered components protect critical systems, while an integrated roll cage and four-point harness ensure occupant safety. The vehicle’s structure combines fiberglass, carbon fiber and Kevlar, striking a balance between durability and reduced weight—essential for high-speed desert driving.
Tailored for the Middle East lifestyle
Genesis has designed the X Skorpio Concept with the Middle East’s strong off-road culture firmly in mind. In regions where high-speed desert driving and dune bashing are deeply ingrained, the concept demonstrates how luxury and extreme performance can coexist.
