India will be the only country in the world to manufacture the Baleno hatchback.

The Suzuki Baleno hatchback which made its global premiere at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show is on display at 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The hatchback which is already on sale in India will be launched globally in a phase-wise manner.

Positioned above the Swift, the Baleno is based on Suzuki’s new global compact car platform which will also underpins the Ignis. The small car specialist says that the architectures floor pan has been engineered to offer better rigidity than the previous small car platform.

The Baleno for the European market will also offer 1.0-litre BoosterJet turbo petrol engine which is unavailable in India as of now.

The simple and neat dashboard houses a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, multifunction steering and instrument console with MID. The hatchback offers good space for the rear seat occupants which is something that the Swift missed out on.

The equipment list of the Euro-spec model includes multiple airbags, projector headlights, daytime running lights, fog lights, alloy wheels, ABS with EBD, ESP, radar-based autonomous emergency braking system and so on.

The car is positioned above the Swift in Suzuki’s global portfolio.

The VW Polo rival is equipped with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder BoosterJet turbo petrol engine which is currently not sold in India. The motor is mated to either to a 5-speed MT or a 6-speed AT to produce 110 PS and 170 Nm of torque. The hatch can also be specified with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine which will benefit from the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle form Suzuki) mild hybrid system which employs an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and a heavy duty battery to enhance fuel efficiency.
