Jawa and Jawa 42 to get more powerful, larger BS6 engine from Perak

With government of India making it banning sale of BS4 vehicles from 1st April 2020, car and bike manufacturers in the country are busy updating their products to meet the new BS6 emission guidelines. Maruti has taken the lead in the passenger car segment, with about 70% of their petrol engine powered line-up already adhering to the new BS6 norms.

In the two wheeler industry, it is Hero, Honda and Yamaha who have taken the first step. Hero launched Splendor BS6 recently, Honda launched Activa BS6 and Yamaha has launched FZ FI / FZS FI with BS6 recently. In the coming days / weeks, more BS6 equipped cars and bikes will be launched in India.

Jawa, which is a relatively new manufacturer, though had launched motorcycles in November 2018, deliveries of their motorcycles started in April 2019. Jawa currently makes two motorcycles – Jawa and Jawa 42; both of which are equipped with a Mojo-based BS4 engine in the 300cc segment. Recently, Jawa announced the launch of their 3rd motorcycle, called Perak. This new Jawa Perak motorcycle will come with a BS6 equipped engine from Day 1. Though launch has been announced, deliveries will only start post 1st April 2020.

Jawa Perak

The engine powering Perak is bigger and more powerful than the engine which powers Jawa and Jawa 42. Both Jawa and Jawa forty two get their power from the same 293 cc liquid cooled, single cylinder, DOHC BS4 engine that makes 27 bhp power and 28 Nm torque. Engine is coupled with a constant mesh 6-speed gearbox. Jawa Perak is powered by a BS4 334 cc engine that delivers 30 bhp power and 31 Nm torque.

Now, a report reveals that Jawa will install the Perak’s larger and more powerful BS6 334cc engine into their two bikes. From 1st April 2020, all 3 Jawa motorcycles – Jawa, 42 and the Perak are expected to come with the same 334 cc single cylinder BS6 engine. Does this mean the end of the line for the current BS4 293 cc engine?

No. Jawa has revealed that they will continue to sell the Jawa and Jawa 42 with the existing 293 cc engine, which will be updated to BS6 norms before 1st April 2020. Now, if the report stating Jawa will install Perak’s engine into Jawa and Jawa 42 is also true, by mid 2020, we will have 5 variants of Jawa on sale. 2 powered by 293 cc engine, and 3 powered by 334 cc engine – all BS6.

Jawa Perak is essentially a Bobber styled motorcycle, even though it has the same double cradle frame as Jawa and Jawa forty two. Perak has matte black finish and black theme that covers most parts such as engine, exhaust, frame, spoke wheels and front forks. The contrasting tan seat is another unique aspect of Perak. The rear section has an entirely different design and comes with a modified subframe. Perak’s rear swingarm and wheelbase are longer than Jawa twins.

Jawa forty two is the cheapest of the three with a starting price tag of Rs 1.55 lakh. Next in the line-up is Jawa, which is priced at Rs 1.64 lakh. Jawa Perak is the costliest at Rs 1.95 lakh. It is to be noted here that prices of Jawa and Jawa 42 are expected to be increased by up to Rs 10k once the BS6 variants are launched.
