Jeep Compass was launched in India earlier this year at a starting price of just INR 14.95 lakhs. It is currently available with 1.4 liter petrol and 2.0 liter diesel engine option. Price ranges from INR 14.95 lakh to INR 20.65 lakh, ex-showroom.
The compact premium SUV has racked up over 10,000 bookings since launch. Most of the bookings registered are for the 2.0 liter diesel engine. Now, a new 1.6 liter MultiJet engine variant has been spotted. This could mean that Jeep India could go even more aggressive and launch an even more affordable Jeep Compass diesel variant in the near future.
The new Jeep Compass 1.6 MultiJet was sighted on test under camouflage but in an Exotica Red exterior color scheme. The rear windshield bore the words “1.6 TD(120) -6MT-AWD LTD -UK-60K” which showed that the particular model was powered by a 1.6 liter Multijet diesel engine mated to a 6 speed manual transmission. There was also a prominent ‘Diesel’ badge on tailgate.
This is the same engine which powers the Maruti S-Cross in India. It delivers 120 PS and 320 Nm torque. The engine is manufactured at the same Fiat plant in Pune where the Compass is being manufactured. If Jeep India launches the more affordable Compass diesel, expect even more bookings and sales numbers.
The launch of Jeep Compass has disrupted the INR 15-20 lakh SUV segment of the Indian auto industry. More and more people are aspiring to buy the new Compass. Even those who are owners of cars like Creta and XUV500 are now in queue to upgrade to the new Compass. With festive season around the corner, Jeep India can surely be hoping for a grand Diwali.
Jeep India could launch the 1.6 liter variant of the Compass at the 2018 Auto Expo. Expect the price to be about INR 1-2 lakh lesser than the respective 2.0 liter variant.
