The five-seater Jeep Compass can be considered as the gamechanger product for the FCA-owned American brand since it had only unreasonably expensive CBU products (Wrangler and Grand Cherokee range) prior to it. Today they announced the launch of two new variants for Compass. These are Jeep Compass 4×4 Longitude 9AT price Rs 21.96 lakhs and Limited Plus for INR 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India).

Commenting on the range expansion, Dr. Partha Datta – President and Managing Director, FCA India said, “We are strengthening and expanding the Jeep Compass range with the introduction of four diesel automatic variants, of which, the base and top-end variant will available to consumers right away. Both variants offer more equipment, boosting the value-for-money proposition for the customer which we believe will increase our share in the segment. This roll out has also given us the opportunity to offer our locally-made BSVI-compliant 2.0-litre turbo-diesel powertrain to consumers much before the statutory deadline.”

Launched back in 2017, the Jeep Compass debuted in both petrol and diesel formats, but the former came mated only to a 7-speed DCT while the latter had just a 6-speed manual, in the mid (Longitude) and upper (Limited) trims. Both engines came coupled to a 6-speed manual in the base Sport trim.

The Jeep Compass is currently available in six variants: Sport, Sport Plus, Longitude, Limited, Limited Plus and Trailhawk. While the first five come in a range of combinations of fuel type, powertrain and transmission, the top-of-the-line Trailhawk plays in a different league with its good off-road capabilities (including all-wheel-drive and terrain modes), diesel-automatic format and purpose-oriented styling.

However, with the launch of the new Jeep Compass diesel-automatic variants, the exclusivity factor of the Trailhawk might take a hit since they get the same 9-speed torque-converter automatic, sending power to all four wheels via Jeep’s Selec-Terrain Active Drive all-wheel-drive system. The old diesel-manual variants will be available alongside with a few bits down on equipment and at around Rs 4 lakh off the new diesel-automatic variants’ price tag.

The new variants employ the Trailhawk’s BS6-compliant 2.0-litre Multijet four-cylinder diesel engine that makes around 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. The introduction of the new BS6 diesel-automatics has also made the list of features across all variants a bit confusing. Jeep India will be updating its website soon with a clear chart of equipment for each of the current six main variants along with its derivatives based on fuel type and powertrain.

The made-in-India Jeep Compass is the most important mass-volume product for FCA in India since the company had to withdraw the Fiat brand from the country on account of poor market performance. With the launch of the new diesel-automatic variants, the Jeep Compass has a clear advantage since its rivals come only with a manual transmission in their diesel avatar.
