The Jeep Compass is doing really well in almost every country it is sold in. Even in India, the new Jeep SUV seems to have already caught the attention of prospective buyers and car enthusiasts alike. Production of this new SUV from FCA India takes place at the company’s Ranjangaon facility near Pune. This production plant is also responsible for manufacturing of the expect-spec Compass for markets like Australia, Japan and UK. It’s is because of the local manufacturing that Jeep India has been able to price its latest offering really competitively. Bookings for the Compass can be made for a booking amount of Rs 50,000. Over 5,000 bookings have already been received.
In India, the Compass can be bought with either of the two available engine options – 1.4-litre T-Jet Turbocharged Petrol and a 2.0-litre Multijet II Turbocharged Diesel. Transmission choices for petrol engine include a 6-speed manual, while for diesel it is both 6 speed manual as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (diesel AT variant will be launched at a later date). The diesel Compass goes on sale in both 4×2 and 4×4 variants, while petrol Compass only gets 4×2 variant. Yes, like we’ve described in our test drive review, the Compass is sufficiently capable even off the road. Internationally, this SUV is also available with a 2.4-litre Petrol engine, but thanks to India’s affinity for Diesel SUVs, Jeep has found it only apt to not offer this engine option here. You can find the full specifications of the Jeep Compass SUV later in this post.
Jeep Compass Price in India
[table id=176 /]
Prices of the new Jeep Compass SUV start at Rs 14.95 Lakh. The most expensive model costs Rs 20.65 Lakh. With this, the Compass becomes a direct rival to the Hyundai Tucson. There’s also some overlap in the prices of the costlier Compass models and the entry-level variants of Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The local manufacturing has indeed helped the company to price this SUV pretty competitively. We’re happy to note that international manufacturers have started to understand the price conscious mindset of an average Indian car buyer. With a really price sensitive market like that of ours, it becomes really important for any car company to make sure its products come across as value-for-money options.

Jeep Compass Specs
[table id=177 /]
The Jeep Compass offers two engine options in India – a 1.4-litre T-iet Turbocharged Petrol and a 2.0-litre Multijet Turbocharged Diesel. While the Petrol engine produces a max. power of 160 BHP and a peak torque of 250 Nm, the Diesel engine option generates a maximum power of 170 BHP and a peak torque of 350 Nm. Both these engines offer Manual and Automatic gearbox options in the form of 6-speed Manual and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic units. The Compass also offers 4×2 and 4×4 variants. Other than all this, it offers four drive modes- auto, show, sand and mud.
In the US, the Compass is also available with a 2.4-litre Petrol engine that produces a maximum power of 180 BHP. Gearbox options for this engine include a 6-speed Manual and a 9-speed Automatic transmission. Given India love for Diesel motors, and for a high fuel mileage in general, this engine option hasn’t been launched in our country.
Jeep Compass Mileage (ARAI)
[table id=178 /]
At the risk of repeating ourselves, we would like to once again state that mileage becomes a really important factor for any new car buyer. With the Compass offering an ARAI-certified average fuel mileage of upto 17.1 KMPL for the Diesel model, the new Jeep SUV should find many takers. Even the TJet petrol engine, in spite of a high power and torque, has a respectable mileage figure of 16.3 KMPL.
So, basically, it is much to do with the above phenomenon that Diesel cars have attained a huge popularity in India. While it’s almost always true that Diesels offer a higher mileage than their Petrol siblings, the fact that Diesel is considerably cheaper than Petrol also helps the case of oil burners. That said, we’ve seen a slight shift towards Petrol models in recent times. This is because Petrol models are generally much cheaper and those who don’t have a high monthly running prefer opting for a Petrol car instead. Finally, it’s almost impossible for a Diesel engine, at least that of a mainstream car, to match the high refinement of a Petrol engine.

Jeep Compass Exterior and Interior Design
The new Jeep Compass SUV looks gets a very modern and a suave exterior design. The Compass gets a typical Jeep look and features the famous 7-slat grille. The high-spec trims get projector setups for the headlights along with the DRLs. This further makes the car’s nose look more high class. The stylish mag rims, the thick C-pillar, blacked-out roof and the bold wheel arches help the car look really butch even when seen in the side profile. The rear of the car is also very stylish. Accentuating the car’s ruggedness is the dual-tone bumper with a faux skid plate. The LED taillamps also help the car look more upmarket. The top-end trim lines get features like roof rails and rear roof spoiler, both of which make the car look more stylish.
Even the interior of this SUV is very stylish and upmarket. The design seems to be inspired from the bigger, pricier SUVs from Jeep. The steering wheel of the Compass looks much like what the international-spec Renegade offers you. The centre stash bears a striking resemblance with that od the mighty Grand Cherokee. Overall, the cabin feels very premium and airy. There’s ample space in both the rows of seats. The boot, at 410-litres, is fairly spacious. All in all, the new Jeep Compass SUV impresses with its design and styling.
