Jeep Renegade test mule has been spotted testing inside Bangalore by our reader Harish Reddy. Sadly, Renegade is not going to be launched in India. The crossover was deemed to be too small and too expensive for the Indian market.
So what are the prototypes doing here you ask? Well, the Renegade is based on FCA’s flexible Small Wide platform which will also underpin the bigger Jeep 551 (codename) and Jeep 556, also known as C Jeep and B Jeep respectively.
The Jeep Liberty and Compass replacement would have India and Brazil as its primary production locations. Presence of the Renegade test mules in the country suggest that Fiat is testing some modules of the platform under Indian conditions.
The project 551 and 556 is being developed in Brazil and US. The mid-size 551 crossover which is set to slot between the Renegade and Cherokee is expected to enter production in India in second half of 2017 or first half of 2018. C Jeep will compete with the likes of Honda CR-V, while the B Jeep, which will be launched at an even later date, will compete with even smaller cars like Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Creta.
FCA India has announced significant investment in the Ranjangaon plant to build infrastructure for the new Jeeps. India will be the manufacturing hub for both new Jeep’s.

Launch of these new Jeep SUVs in India will make the brand more accessible to a wider range of buyers. Once new Jeep’s are launched, the brand hopes to sell 60,000 to 1 lakh units a year from their plant in Pune.
