Ameya Walavalkar wins Race One of Round Three of the Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2012

Sailesh Bolisetti and Sandeep Kumar takes the second and third spot respectively

Chennai, August 26, 2012 – Ameya Walavalkar continued his great start to the weekend by winning Race One of Round Three of the Volkswagen Polo R Cup at the MMRT in Chennai today. He completed the entire race in total time of 20:30:378. 2010 Polo R Cup Champion Sailesh Bolisetti finished in second spot, 1.640 behind the leader, and Sandeep Kumar finished in third place, 8.881 seconds off the leader.

Ameya, who started on pole, had a great start and led into the first corner followed by Sandeep and Avdumber Hede. However, due to a collision at the second corner between Yatin Magu and Alisha Abdullah, the race was red-flagged. At the restart, Ameya once again got off the line well and led away from guest driver Sailesh and Sandeep. Ameya pulled away from the pack and maintained his lead to win his second race of the season. Sailesh finished second while Sandeep finished third after a close battle with Avdumber in the latter part of the race.

Ameya almost lost out to Sandeep after missing a gear in the first lap. He said, “At the first start, I missed a gear but the race was red flagged, giving me an opportunity to pull away from the rest of the field at the restart. The track was good but tricky in some places as there were puddles. I would like to thank theVolkswagen team who have been fantastic the entire weekend. The technicians here are amazing as they worked relentlessly to ensure we had the best possible car for the race.”

Second place finisher Sailesh said “I was 1.394 seconds behind in qualifying and knew I had to go faster in the race to challenge for the lead. I managed to set similar times to Ameya but could not come close enough. It took me some time to get used the new TSI Race Polo but the more I drove it the more comfortable I was. I am looking forward to the second race as it will be fun to battle from seventh on the grid.”

Sandeep said, “I had a good start the first time round but then the race was red-flagged. Second time around I had too much wheel spin and lost a place to Sailesh and barely kept Avdumber behind. It was impossible to keep up with Sailesh so I just maintained my position to finish on the podium.”

Mihir Dharkar wins enthralling Race Two of Round Three of theVolkswagen Polo R Cup 2012

Ajay Kini handed post race 20 second penalty and loses first place
Ameya leads the championship followed by Mihir and Sandeep

Chennai, August 26, 2012 – Mihir Dharkar took victory in an action packed Race Two of Round Three of the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2012 at the MMRT in Chennai today after race winner Ajay Kini got a post-race 20 second penalty for colliding with Donavan Vaz. He completed the entire race in total time of 20:40.432. Race One winner Ameya Walavalkar and guest driver Sailesh Bolisetti finished closely behind, in second and third spot, 0.002 seconds and 0.556 seconds off the leader.

Saurav Bandyopadhay started on pole for the reverse grid Race Two and led from the start. He spun later in the lap handing the lead to Donovan Vaz. Ajay and Mihir stayed behind for most of the race before attacking Donovan with three laps to go. Donovan, who was suffering from tyre wear, lost the lead when battling with Ajay and slipped further down the field. This led to a three-way battle between Ajay, Mihir and Ameya for the lead on the last lap. Ajay managed to just cross the finish line in first position with Mihir and Ameya right behind. Ajay was later penalized for colliding with Donovan.

Mihir finished in second spot after a long battle with Ajay. He said “I am really happy with my performance today. My plan was to maintain position behind Ajay and attack at the end of the race. Every time I tried to overtake Ajay, I felt Ameya try to overtake me but the great thing was that there was clean racing between all of us. It is unfortunate but I am happy to inherit the win from Ajay.”

Race One winner Ameya finished second after starting eighth on the grid. He said, “It was a fun race and I am very happy to finish on the podium. I was batting throughout the race and came really close to beating Mihir to second place. This type of close wheel to wheel racing is great for Indian Motorsport.”

Prithviraj Siddappa, Head of Motorsport, Volkswagen India said, “The racing in Chennai this weekend has been brilliant with one of the closest races of the season. The drivers put on a great show and I am confident that they will continue to improve as the season progresses. We have seen different race winners on podium which is great for the series. The Championship standings at the top is really close so I am looking forward to the rest of the season. ”
