India is now the third largest automobile market in the world, surpassing Japan. Even though most of the volumes come from mainstream segment, there is a growing tendency among buyers to opt for premium vehicles. JSW Motor is aiming to carve out a piece of this premium segment for itself with its first-ever vehicle.

However, JSW Motor is trying to stand out from the crowd by offering a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle for a price point of around Rs 45 lakh (Ex-sh). This might prove to be a great news for Indian car buyers as the most affordable plug-in Hybrid vehicle in the country currently costs a couple of crore rupees due to the sheer lack of mainstream PHEVs.

Currently, JSW has reportedly indulged in talks with a few international carmakers for a strategic partnership. These talks are said to be in final rounds and a deal with one of these international carmakers could be inked in the coming weeks. The launch timeline for JSW Motor plug-in hybrid EV is around June 2026.

JSW Motor will come up with an SUV with plug-in hybrid powertrain and it will be produced at the company’s upcoming facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra. JSW Motor CEO Ranjan Naik has confirmed that the company will enter India’s passenger vehicle segment with a hybrid model later in 2026 and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar facility will be at the forefront of this endeavour.

Indian carmakers are currently invested heavily into either pure EVs or self-charging hybrid vehicles advertised as ‘strong hybrid’. Only Mahindra is rumoured to be developing EREVs (Extended Range Electric Vehicles) with an IC engine used as a generator to extend range of the electric powertrain.

What to expect?

CEO Ranjan Naik has also revealed that the company is evaluating technology partnership with multiple potential global partners. The company is working on a retail and distribution network too and the first JSW dealership will be established closer to product launch. JSW Motor may divulge more details as they reach appropriate milestones.

If we take a look at Indian automotive market, we have a few hybrid vehicles just for the sake of slapping a Hybrid badge on them. Then come self-charging hybrid vehicles with only a few hundred metres worth of pure electric range, which can prove beneficial only in city conditions. A step up would be plug-in hybrid vehicles with exponentially more meaningful pure electric range.

Without any mainstream plug-in hybrid vehicles, only luxury brands offered this tech. There used to be PHEVs in India like Land Rover Defender P400e and Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV, among others. Now, the most affordable PHEV in India is a Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 S E Performance 4MATIC, followed by BMW M5 Competition and others.
