News about KTM working on entry level adventure series of motorcycles keeps popping up every now and then, for some years now. But never has been there a word about its launch plans, or to be precise launch timing. Not anymore. The first spy images are out, ahead of the bike’s global debut next year, most probably at the EICMA 2017.
KTM had revealed earlier that the new 390 Adventure is not going to be a Duke 390 with longer suspension travel. But it will be a thorough off-roader, built to last any terrain you throw at it.
KTM wants to build a 390 Adventure in the Travel Enduro class. Which will not only be good for long rides, but also will be a fantastic off-roader when you need it to be.
Its not that KTM did not try and get the job done with a Duke 390 with longer suspension. In fact, they had readied such prototypes, but that didn’t go far as there were problems like increased rider seat height, not much change in ground clearance, etc. This is why, KTM decided to go ahead and build a thorough off-roader and not something that is just a mod-job of Duke 390.
Jointly developed by KTM and Bajaj, this new series of entry level adventure motorcycles will be manufactured by Bajaj at their plant in Chakan, where KTM Duke 125, 200, 390 and KTM RC 125, 200, and 390 are produced.
Speaking of the engine, there are not expected to be any changes. There might be some tuning made to the engine output so as to make it more pleasurable for adventure touring. Expect the adventure series to be slotted between the Duke and RC in the company line-up.
Once launched, KTM 390 Adventure will take on the likes of BMW G310GS, an adventure motorcycle based on the G310R (also due for launch in 2017), Royal Enfield Himalayan (already launched), Kawasaki Versys X300 (expected in 2017), etc.
