KTM Duke 800 medium displacement naked sportsbike has been rendered accurately by Germany’s Motorrad magazine, based on the spy shots of a production ready test mule. Last year, KTM CEO Stefan Pierer announced that upmarket sportsbikes based on 500 cc and 800 cc platforms would be built in India in the next 3 years.
Considering that all compact Dukes (save for Duke 690) have Bajaj’s Chakan plant in India as their global manufacturing base, there is a high chance that Duke 800 would also call India its home.
KTM Duke 800 features the quintessential edgy and aggressive character of its family yet manages to have a unique appeal. A small triangular headlamp and minimal bodywork accentuate the motorcycle’s new hardware.
Speaking of the new hardware, Duke 800 is all set to become the brand’s smallest twin-cylinder engined model. To be positioned between single-cylinder Duke 690 and twin-cylinder Super Duke 1290, the new machine will debut a fresh power plant whose technical specification are under wraps. Going by KTM’s reputation for extracting magical engine output figures, it’s safe to expect the new engine to push out around 120 PS.
Like its 690 sibling, Duke 800 features a meaty WP inverted telescopic fork upfront and a monoshock at the rear. Neither the spy shots nor the rendering offer conclusive evidence on the type of chassis (most likely to be a trellis frame which is in-line with KTM’s tradition). The front wheel is retarded by twin discs while the rear wheel gets a single disc.
KTM Duke 800 is potentially a disruptive product in the medium displacement sportsbike segment in India because it will be the first and the only bike of its caliber to be fully manufactured in the country when it goes on sale here. This is sure to give it an unparalleled advantage when it comes to pricing! If manufactured here in India, expect prices to start in the range of Rs 5-6 lakhs.
