JLR India has announced that Land Rover Discovery Sport will be launched on September 2. Bookings for the Freelander 2 replacement have commenced now across all JLR outlets in India.
Discovery Sport will become the most affordable product in the Tata-owned British SUV specialist’s Indian portfolio when it goes on sale here. As of now, that title is being held by locally assembled Range Rover Evoque which starts at INR 48.73 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai pre-octroi).
The first member of new Discovery family will compete with the likes of Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Audi M-Class and would be using its optional 5+2 seating configuration to have an edge. Other equipment highlights include Terrain Response System, 9-speed automatic transmission, park assist, etc.
JLR has not revealed the engine options for the premium SUV yet. When it made its international debut, Discovery Sport was offered with an older 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine which was offered in two states of tune – 150 PS and 180 PS. This engine was recently replaced by a Euro-6 compliant 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine which is available in 147 PS and 187 PS guises. It remains to be seen which one of these engines will be offered in India.
