Land Rover Discovery Sport is all set to take the baton from Freelander 2 as the brand’s most affordable SUV. The emergence of the vehicle on Indian roads without any camouflage indicates that launch plan is on schedule and we can see commencement of sales sometime in August or September.
With design cues derived from new Range Rovers, the premium SUV is a huge step forward compared to Freelander 2. To be pitted against the likes of BMW X3, Mercedes GLE (ML), Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, Discovery Sport will bank on its unique advantage of 5+2 seating configuration to have a competitive edge.
The car recently received an engine update in international markets. The new Ingenium 2.0-litre diesel motor which is available in two states of tune – 150 PS and 180 PS – has replaced the older 2.2-litre diesel engine which is offered in 147 PS and 187 PS tunes. We expect the older motor to be offered in India with a 9-speed automatic transmission. 4WD will be standard.
Discovery Sport would be Land Rover’s volume spinner in India and is estimated to have a rice range of around INR 40-50 lakhs (ex-showroom).
