Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has recalled 63,493 units of the above-mentioned cars’ SHVS avatars. Apparently, there is a safety risk revolving around the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) models’ ISG system. These vehicles are manufactured between 1st January 2019 to 21st November 2019.
The ISG or Integrated Starter Generator unit is an integral part of modern automobiles and replaces a conventional starter and alternator (generates energy from the engine to keep the battery and electrical equipment running).
To some extent, it helps in improving a vehicle’s fuel-efficiency during cranking (starting) and idling, since it reduces the load on the engine considerably. This is the reason why many manufacturers employ it in their products under the moniker, ‘mild-hybrid’.
In their official statement, Maruti said, “The Company will inspect 63,493 vehicles of petrol SHVS of Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6 for a possible issue with the Motor Generator Unit (MGU). A possible defect may have occurred in the MGU during manufacturing by an overseas global part supplier.”
In addition to the recall decision, dealerships have been advised to keep the existing stocks on hold until further notice. In order to maintain customer satisfaction, Maruti Suzuki plans to offer loaner cars for owners with the affected SHVS units. The SHVS mild-hybrid system in modern Maruti Suzuki products comes with an automatic start/stop function (upon idling), along with torque-assist. The 2014 Maruti Ciaz sedan was the first model to come with the technology. At the time, the Maruti Ciaz diesel SHVS model was the most fuel-efficient Indian car with an ARAI-claimed figure of 28.09km/l.
Eventually, Maruti Suzuki ditched the SHVS unit in the original FCA-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS 200 diesel engines to make way for the newer 1.5-litre DDiS 225 units. SHVS is currently available only with the 1.5-litre K15B petrol motor, which made its debut in the Maruti Ciaz itself back in August 2018. The 1.3-litre diesel SHVS engine is available in lower trims.
The petrol SHVS engine makes 103bhp and 138Nm of torque. Depending on the model, there are choices of a 5-speed manual or an automatic transmission. The old 1.3-litre DDiS SHVS engine is good for around 90bhp and 200Nm of torque, while the bigger non-SHVS 1.5-litre engine makes almost 95bhp and 225Nm. The 1.3-litre DDiS unit gets a 5-speed manual as standard while the 1.5-litre DDiS unit boasts of a 6-speed manual.
At least for the time being, the Maruti XL6 is available only in an SHVS petrol format. A diesel variant might be launched in the coming months, considering the high demand.
