Magneti Marelli is seeing success doing business with auto manufacturers that cater to Indian market. To capitalise on that, the Fiat Group owned company is in the process of establishing two new manufacturing plants in India, one for making (AMT) Automated Manual Transmission kits and other for automotive lighting. The Italian auto component manufacturer currently supplies AMT kits to Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors, for Celerio, Alto K10, Zest and Nano F-Tronic (yet to launch). All these are currently imported and distributed, at a low supply-to-demand ratio. Later this year, the firm expects to sign two more automakers, which would be for Mahindra S101 and Renault XBA (both are codenames).
The AMT plant would be ready by the end of this year at Manesar, near Maruti Suzuki plant. An investment of around Rs. 150 crore is tied to this plant. Magneti Marelli AMT in India is aimed to reach 100 percent localisation soon, to spike the supplies and make it cost effective.
The company will also be working on signing up major two-wheeler makers in the country, for supplying integral motorcycle components. Magneti Marelli on Wednesday started manufacturing Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) for Hero MotoCorp, as a result of a joint venture between them inked in December, 2013. The same facility that produces EFI will also take care of offering additional functionality like immobilisers, flexi fuel, multi map, multi-fuel management, and traction & slip control.
