While to date, AMT technology was sourced from Italy, it will henceforth be customized for the Indian market at the Magneti Marelli new AMT facility in Manesar. This AMT technology is based on use of ECU combine with electro hydraulic system to control clutch during change of gears allowing driver to shift gears without clutch in sequential or fully automatic mode.
The new Magneti Marelli AMT plant commenced production in July this year and has been supplying AMT to Maruti Suzuki from August 2015. With the plant fully operational and production of AMT kits being conducted locally, waiting period for Maruti Suzuki models with AMT will be considerably reduced.
Constructed in just 9 months, Magneti Marelli AMT plant in Manesar commenced with initial production capacity of 10,000 units per month which will be increased to over 23,000 units by the end of 2016 or early 2017. These AMT kits are seen in the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Alto K10 models while the company also undertakes supplies to Tata Motors for its Zest and Nano models. (Mahindra TUV300 gets AMT which is developed in-house, with help from Ricardo).
Magneti Marelli Powertrain India is a JV between the component arm of Fiat SpA of Italy, Maruti Suzuki and Suzuki Motor Company. Its AMT facility is situated on the Maruti Suzuki premises and is the 11th plant that Magneti Marelli has in India. INR 150 crores is invested in this AMT plant and once the plant is fully operation, the company expects total persons employed to go upto 2,300.
