If Mahindra and their dealers are to be believed, the pre-booking numbers are through the roof. Mahindra is almost confident that the Alturas will dethrone Toyota Fortuner from its perch.

Alkesh, a businessman from Pune has been a fan of Toyota Fortuner for years. His family has owned the previous gen Fortuner, and now are proud owners of new Fortuner. Recently, he got a chance to take detailed look and test drive of the new Alturas. Initially, he was not even ready to take a test drive as he was very happy with the car and believed that there is nothing that can be better than Fortuner in India.

But after driving the car, he was left surprised. In his own words, he said that no other car has ever surprised him this much. How did Mahindra manage to build this kind of quality / car; and that too price it lesser than the Fortuner, he asks? Mahindra Alturas is really high quality premium car. It is probably as good as Audi, BMW, Mercedes SUVs sold in India, or even better. Apart from the lower price and premium built quality, there are some more points where the Alturas a better can than the Fortuner;

More space than Fortuner: Alturas offers more space on the inside, as compared to Fortuner. Alturas is tallest and the widest SUV in the semgent. It also has a longer wheelbase than Fortuner.

Ventilated seats: Mahindra has coined a new definition of comfort by offering ventilated seats in Alturas G4. The specially designed ventilated seats allow cool or hot air to flow freely through them, thereby improving passenger experience. Toyota Fortuner does not have this premium feature.

9 airbags: Toyota Fortuner offers 7 airbags whereas Alturas G4 has 9 airbags. This makes Alturas G4 safer than Fortuner, in terms of level of protection available.

Sunroof: Alturas gets sunroof. In comparison, Fortuner does not offer sunroof in any of its variants.

360° camera: Fortuner has reverse camera, but Alturas G4 has taken the lead by offering a state-of-the-art 360° camera. The advanced camera provides 360° view of the outside, which makes it easier to reverse and park the vehicle and manoeuvre it in small, crowded places.

Active rollover mitigation: Both Fortuner and Alturas G4 have Electronic Stability Program (ESP) safety feature, but Mahindra is also offering Active Rollover Mitigation. The advanced system takes inputs from ESP sensors and applies brakes to individual wheels and reduces driving torque when there’s a risk of roll over. This makes Alturas G4 safer than Fortuner, in terms of reducing the risk of a roll over.
