Mahindra to exit from motorcycle grand prix racing by end 2017

Mahindra Racing, winner of 3 races in 2016 Moto3 World Championship has announced that the 2017 season will be its last. There will now be special emphasis towards the FIA Formula E Championship electric car racing.

The shift seems to be evident. From the 8 races done till now in this Moto3 season, Mahindra Racing riders have managed to score just 5 points in total. The rider on top of the table, Honda’s Joan Mir alone has 140 points.

Announcing their arrival back in 2011 in the junior category, they soon entered the Moto3 circuit. In 2013 they got their first podium with Miguel Oliveira as the rider. Last year they made history, Francesco Bagnaia won the race, thereby making Mahindra the first and only Indian origin manufacturer to win a grand prix race.

The company wants to focus more on electric car technology. Mahindra is the only manufacturer of fully electric vehicles in the country. They have been doing well where e-vehicles are concerned. Recently, they won their first race in Berlin and are currently ranked third in the overall standing.

Mahindra first made its foray into the electric vehicle business in 2010 with the purchase of Reva Electric Car Company. The company has made great progress in this segment with the e2o and e-Verito electric cars and has a number of projects under EV2.0 in progress.

Mahindra will participate in 2017 season with complete engineering and on-track support from Mahindra racing for the Aspar team and two customer teams of CIP and Peugeot Saxoprint. Its exit will now leave only two teams – Honda and KTM as Moto3 manufacturers. This exit can also be seen as a means to clearing up funds for an entry into Dakar with the new and modified version of Super XUV500 which is being used in Indian Rally Championships.
