Mahindra & Mahindra has not had even a brief moment of success in sub-4 metre segment, well that’s pretty much because those offerings were merely experiments, named Verito Vibe and Quanto. But Mahindra S101 is an all-new compact SUV that is set to take on the acclaimed Ford EcoSport among other upcoming nameplates.
Mahindra S101, a compact crossover developed from grounds-up on monocoque architecture, will be launched as a six-seater. Engine choices will include a 1.2 litre petrol and 1.5 litre diesel; both expected to produce around 90 PS max power. Mahindra S101 will feature Automated Manual Transmission (AMT); unclear which engine it will receive rotation from.
Higher up, another all-new compact SUV to serve those who want a bigger than S101 car, there is codenamed U301 (dubbed next-generation Bolero). It is underpinned by a lightweight yet sturdy, next generation ladder-frame chassis (based on the one supporting new Scorpio), to offer some hardcore capabilities that its rivals Renault Duster, upcoming Maruti S-Cross, Hyundai ix25 and the like may not be proficient in. Further, it will be a seven seater, making a louder bang for the buck. But what’s really blasting is that a 4WD is said to be underway. Mahindra U301 will be powered by newly developed 1.5 litre diesel motor, and AMT is rumoured to be in the offing.
