Mahindra-Ssangyong compact SUV set for launch by end 2015


Mahindra & Mahindra, leading utility vehicle makers in the country are keen to introduce a new compact SUV by the end of 2015 or early 2016 to combat competition from the new Ford EcoSport.

The new SUV from Mahindra SsangYong is currently codenamed S102 and will one of the first products to be introduced on a joint platform. To be manufactured from the company plant in Nasik, S102 compact SUV will be based on SsangYong X100 for which the company is developing a compact 1 liter turbocharged petrol engine with variable valve timing and direct injection as is being offered by Ford EcoBoost engine. This engine promises enough power for a much larger vehicle along with higher fuel efficiency, two factors which will be welcomed on board the new and compact Mahindra SUV.

The two auto majors are coming together for 6 engine options but the new product based on X100 platform is their biggest and most innovative venture which is sure to meet with success to the advantage of both companies. Joint development and pooled investments for this venture will also allow the company to save tens of thousands of dollars.

In the meantime, the company has already sourced a new automatic transmission which will make its way into products of both M&M and SsangYong while they are also working on a small Trans-axle component which is used on front wheel drive transmission which has saved the two companies 5-7% on material costs.
