Mahindra’s upcoming compact SUV, which the Indian major is developing along with SsangYong, was recently spotted in heavy camouflage.
Code named S101, the compact SUV first images were seen with its overall length retained to under 4 meters. This enables the company to take advantage of a lower excise duty at 12%, which will facilitate a lower price which is pegged at under INR 5 lakhs for the base variant.
The engine of this new compact SUV may be same as that seen on Mahindra Quanto, meaning it will possess a 3 cylinder diesel engine, offering both higher level of fuel economy and better drivability. It is also surmised that the upcoming S101 will possess a monocoque construction which will mean an overall lighter vehicle giving the SUV a hatch/sedan like feel. However, reduced length will mean that third row seats will be a constraint, and interiors may not be as spacious as a standard SUV.
S101 is expected to be launched with both petrol and diesel engine options, with SsangYong playing a major role in its engine development. The compact SUV will be produced from the Mahindra plant in Chakan near Pune. Spy shot here of the new Mahindra compact SUV is credit to AutoCar India.
