Mahindra U301 compact SUV will be priced aggressively and will be placed in a segment below the Scorpio, but above Bolero. On 30th July, Mahindra will reveal the official name of this SUV, which is codenamed U301 internally. Apart from this, Mahindra will also reveal strategic information regarding their steps forward in the Indian auto industry.

Please note that 30th July is not the launch date, at the most we expect the car to be revealed completely, if not the engine and feature details. Price will only be revealed when Mahindra launches the car officially, which will happen later this year.

Being targeted for the rural market, the new U301 sits on a new ladder frame chassis that is also seen on the new Scorpio. Mahindra U301 is also expected to get new range of diesel and petrol engine options which the UV maker has been developing. These could be in the form of four cylinder petrol and four cylinder diesel engines. It has also been estimated that the U301 will be one of the most fuel efficient compact SUVs in the segment.

These include a new steering wheel design, a large central screen with touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth, USB and AUX-in connectivity, air conditioning and power windows.

Predicting serious competition from many fronts on official launch in the country, Mahindra is expected to keep pricing between INR 6-9 lakhs.

I can’t seem to understand why this vehicle is mentioned as one that is primarily for the rural market. The interiors and the overall design look contemporary enough to be a decent ride even in the metro cities of India. I am also sure that there will be sizeable chunk of urban/city dwellers who absolutely love an old school BOXY, ladder on frame SUV. So I can’t figure out why everyone keeps mentioning specifically that this is primarily a vehicle for the rural masses.
Is there something that auto journos know that we don’t?

    • In one of the interviews, Mahindra officials had said that U301 will be targeted at rural buyers, while S101 and S102 will be targeted at urban buyers.

Yes, you are correct. There will be many in urban India who will be interested in buying the U301, but it will be the rural India where Mahindra expects to sell more units.

The reason, is the size, structure and the way these new SUVs have been built, and not the features it will offer.

      Hope this helps you understand.

Thank you for your detailed response. And yes this does clear my doubt to a large extent.

I bet it is safe to assume that regardless of its intended market, the U301 will be sold in the cities especially the Metros. I say this because I was told by a dealer that the current Bolero cannot be registered in Delhi because it does not meet the emission norms (BS IV).

The S101, from what appears in d spyshots, is more like a hatchback rather than a crossover, much less an SUV plus the single bench seat up-front makes it more like in the league of the Datsun GO. I have my doubts how many in the cities will accept that arrangement.

I gather Mahindra will give some details on the U301 day after tomorrow. Let’s see what they divulge .

        Thank you again.
