Scoop: Mahindra U301 production to commence in second week of July

Mahindra U301 (1) production start soon

Mahindra’s second sub-4 metre ladder frame SUV has started testing with production-ready body panels. The mini Bolero will have an upmarket appeal while retaining the boxy nature.

According our sources, production of Mahindra U301 (codename) is scheduled to commence by second week of July 2015, indicating that the SUV would be launched sometime in August. This will be one of 9 new products that Mahindra has announced for this financial year. The launching spree was kick started by XUV500 facelift.

Mahindra U301 spied in a production ready guise recently.

New spyshots of U301 with minimal camouflage have surfaced. Seems, Mahindra’s designers have attempted to give it a mini-Hummer appeal but had to operate within strict dimensional limitations. The boxy UV is characterized by prominent headlamps, massive grille with vertical slates, flat roofline, vertical rear fascia and small rear doors. The car gets tailgate-mounted spare wheel and multi-spoke alloy wheels.

Interior adopts new design language but in the interest of occupant space, U301 features an upright dashboard. We can expect a comprehensive infotainment system on top-end variant with steering-mounted controls.

1.5-litre mCR100 diesel engine would be borrowed from Quanto.

Underpinned by hydroformed ladder frame chassis, the upcoming Mahindra UV borrows its 1.5-litre three-cylinder mCR100 engine from Quanto but with improvements. The engine produces 100 bhp and 240 Nm in Quanto. A 5-speed manual and AMT constitute transmission lineup.

Since Quanto is also undergoing a facelift, both cars are expected to coexist. Market positioning of Mahindra U301 would slightly more upmarket compared to its sibling, with an estimated price range of INR 6.5 – 8.5 lakhs (ex-showroom).
