Mahindra’s upcoming Vision S SUV has been spotted once again, this time revealing far more about what buyers can expect from the production version. The latest spy shots, captured on Indian roads, confirm that the Vision S is edging closer to reality and will arrive as a feature-packed, sub-4-metre SUV with a strong, boxy stance inspired by rugged off-roaders.
Based on what is visible, the Vision S is likely to be positioned as a lifestyle-oriented compact SUV, sitting below Scorpio but borrowing its tough visual appeal. The upright silhouette, flat surfaces and squared-off proportions seen under camouflage clearly point towards a design philosophy similar to the Land Rover Defender, albeit in a more compact and urban-friendly format.

Diesel Automatic Confirmed
One of the biggest takeaways from these new spy shots is confirmation of a diesel powertrain. The fuel filler area clearly shows an AdBlue refill cap next to the diesel filler, indicating a BS6 Phase-2 compliant diesel engine.
More importantly, the gear lever inside the cabin confirms this particular test mule is equipped with an automatic transmission. This is significant, as diesel-automatic combinations are still rare in the sub-4m SUV segment, giving Mahindra a potential USP right from launch.

Mid-Spec Variant Spotted
The test vehicle appears to be a mid-spec variant. This is evident from the use of halogen turn indicators at both the front and rear, instead of full LED units. Inside the cabin, the SUV gets Mahindra’s standard steering wheel, rather than the illuminated logo steering seen on newer and higher-end Mahindra models. The seats are finished in fabric upholstery, further indicating that this is not the top-end trim.

Interior Layout Matches Concept
Despite being a mid-spec version, the interior closely mirrors the Vision S concept showcased in August last year. The dashboard layout, air vent design and overall cabin architecture look largely unchanged from the concept car. Physical buttons for infotainment and climate control are retained, a welcome move for usability, especially in a rugged, lifestyle-oriented SUV.

A large touchscreen infotainment system dominates the centre of the dashboard, paired with a digital instrument cluster. The overall design prioritises practicality while still feeling modern and premium for the segment.
Panoramic Sunroof in a Sub-4m SUV
Another major highlight is the panoramic sunroof. The glass roof extends well beyond the front row and continues almost till the rear seat headrests, reinforcing Mahindra’s premium positioning for the Vision S. This feature alone could make it one of the most feature-rich offerings in the compact SUV space.

Rear Seat Practicality
At the rear, the Vision S ticks important family-friendly boxes. All three rear passengers get individual adjustable headrests, and the rear bench comes with a 60:40 split function. These features, combined with the boxy body style, suggest good headroom and usable cabin space despite the sub-4m footprint.

What to Expect Going Forward
The Vision S is expected to be underpinned by Mahindra’s new NU IQ platform, which will also spawn multiple future SUVs. Alongside the confirmed diesel automatic, petrol engine options are also likely at launch. Powering the petrol variants could be their 1.2 liter turbo engine on offer with XUV 3XO, which is the most powerful engine in the segment. The diesel variants could get powered by the 1.5 liter engine, which is offered with entry variants of the Thar.

Given Mahindra’s recent strategy, strong safety credentials, connected tech and multiple drive modes can also be expected. Once launched, the Mahindra Vision S will not only take on popular sub-4m SUVs, but also take on cars sitting a segment above, like the Tata Sierra – with a distinct focus on rugged design, premium features and powertrain options that rivals currently lack. More details are expected to emerge as testing intensifies in the coming months.
