Mahindra has started testing the new generation of their Cheetah inspired SUV – XUV500. All new 2020 Mahindra XUV500 was recently spotted on test by automotive enthusiast and Rushlane Spylane member – Mr Kanna. The images were clicked when the test mule was on NH 45, between Chennai and Chengalpet on Chennai – Kanniyakumari highway.

Along with the new gen XUV500 test mule, there was also a test mule of the current XUV500 BS6 variant. These new spy shots show that the second gen XUV500 will see some changes in design as compared to its current counterpart though it will retain its basic silhouette.

These design tweaks expected include a more upright nose, a wider front grille and smaller headlamps. Mahindra is known for offering top notch features, expect the 2020 XUV500 to get all LED headlamp setup with LED DRLs and LED foglamps.

While the earlier gen model sported ‘cheetah claw’ handles, the upcoming XUV500 will get regular flush door handles. Though it is not yet confirmed if these will be with a power operated pop out function or whether they will be of a lever type arrangement. Besides looking different, these newly designed door handles will enhance aerodynamics. These slender door handles fit flat on the door when not needed adding a more premium appeal.

Mahindra is likely to spruce up interiors with features borrowed from the new gen SsangYong Korando. It will get dual zone climate controls, a panoramic sunroof and a fully digital instrument cluster along with ventilated seats and a powered tailgate. The driver seat will have power adjustable and memory function, while other equipment will include touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, rain sensing wipers, keyless entry, push button start, etc.

The new XUV500 will include 2.0 liter petrol and diesel engines which will have power and torque outputs more than the current 2.2 liter units. The new 2 liter diesel engine on board the 2020 XUV500 is expected to deliver about 180 PS. Both diesel and petrol engines will be mated to 6 speed manual and automatic transmission options along with an all wheel drive variant.

No launch date for the new XUV500 has been revealed but a 2020 launch is on the cards following its debut at the upcoming Auto Expo in February as a concept. It will see pricing at a premium over current pricing which stands between Rs.12.31-18.52 lakhs. Once launched, it will take on new competitors like the MG Hector and Tata Harrier.
