Release of water from the overflowing Khadakwasla Dam caused much flooding on Pune’s roads in the past few hours, as rivers broke their banks. Several roads and bridges were sealed and alerts were sent out to citizens to avoid certain areas.
While many of Pune’s residents stayed indoors, some had to dare the vagaries of nature to get about their daily work. It was at Baba Bhide Bridge in Narayan Peth in the afternoon of August 3, that a Maruti Zen was stuck while its driver got locked inside. The unidentified driver was trapped in his car even as flood waters continued to rise.
The flow of the water caused the Maruti Zen to inch towards the river while the car got completely submerged. Bystanders watched helplessly as the car sank further, unsure of what to do. Luckily, a group of men immediately jumped into the water and managed to stop the car from going into the river. The men pushed the vehicle into a dry area and managed to extricate the driver from the locked car saving him from what would have been certain death. The entire episode was caught on camera.
The past two days has seen tremendous rainfall all across Pune. While Pune received 39.6 mm rainfall, the entire district received 63.2mm. Because of this excess rain, 22,500 cusecs of water was released from the Khadakwasla Dam which increased levels at Bhide Bridge, Vitthalwadi and Vishrantwadi.
Further rains will see more water being released and citizens are requested to take note of the situation even as a high alert has been sounded. The Disaster Management Cell of the Pune Municipal Corporation has taken charge of the situation and citizens have been advised to contact 020 25506800/1/2/3/4 in the event of any emergencies.
