The Maruti ACross test mule has confirmed the employment of a 1.6 litre engine, but it is unclear if that is a diesel or a petrol powered unit.
Two kinds of 1.6 litre engines for Maruti ACross have long been speculated. One is Suzuki’s 1.6 litre petrol engine displacing 1,586 cc and the other is Fiat’s 1.6 MultiJet diesel engine with 1,598 cc. The Maruti ACross prototype could be either one of them. Until we know which one, we can’t confirm which engine will be on offer, as Maruti Suzuki has the ability to opt for a smaller engine, for either petrol or diesel. The Suzuki S-Cross on sale in European markets, have both aforementioned 1.6 litre engines on the brochure.

If 1.6 litre Fiat MJD is used, expect same 120 PS max power but almost double 320 Nm peak torque will be pumped, and this motor will be connected to 6-speed manual transmission (only). If both 1.6L engines are offered, then we would be looking at a very serious contender in the compact SUV segment.
