Maruti Alto becomes best selling car of all time in India

Maruti Alto best selling car of all time in India

The Alto took 15 years to achieve what the 800 managed in 29 years.

The Maruti Alto has just surpassed the sales record of its now defunct ancestor Maruti 800 to emerge as the best selling car of all time in the history of Indian auto industry. Launched in September 2000, the entry level hatchback surpassed a sales mark of 29,19,819 units in October 2015.

The overall sales performance of the Alto is better than the 800 which put India on wheels. Launched in 1983, the little hatchback soldiered on for 29 years before hanging up its boots in January 2014.

Talking about the Alto’s massive success, R S Kalsi, Executive Director Marketing and Sales, said that the hatchback’s low acquisition and maintenance costs combined with high fuel efficiency made it the car of choice for a generation of Indians.

Since it’s inception, India’s best selling car received quite a few upgrades and refreshes. The Alto K10 with bigger 1.0-litre engine was launched in 2010-2011, all-new Alto 800 went on sale in 2012-12 and 2014 saw the introduction of refreshed Alto K10 with an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission).

Though the Alto has been dominating the sales charge for past several years, the budget car is now facing a significant pressure from the Renault Kwid. Moving forward, the Datsun redi-Go will also be aiming to mount pressure on Maruti’s bread and butter model.
