Maruti Alto Sales Cross 40 Lakh in 20 Years Since Launch in 2000

Maruti Suzuki’s most affordable car, Alto has achieved yet another sales milestone

Maruti Suzuki Alto has been around for longer than one is aware of. And in this time, the little car has delighted 40 lakh buyers. Not just for MSIL as a brand, but Alto is the only car to have reached the 40 lakh sales milestone. And in its journey of 20 years, it has triumphed as a top selling vehicle for 16 consecutive years in the Indian auto industry.

The compact Alto is popular among first time car buyers. MSIL say 76 percent of Alto buyers choose it as their first car. Its compact design remains a mainstay, and over the years, the vehicle has received regular safety updates. Alto small car is suitable for easy manoeuvring, and has a decent fuel efficiency.

With the Indian PV market growing for over a decade, it’s no surprise that each year a large number of first time buyers make a car buying decision. Since 2000, Maruti Suzuki Alto has found takers ‘across different geographies’.

Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “ Alto has been ranked as the No.1 selling car in India for 16th and we are immensely proud to announce another remarkable milestone of 40 lakh cumulative sales. This has become a sales record never achieved by any other Indian car.”

USP of Alto

MSIL says Alto’s USP lies in its compact modern design, easy manoeuvrability, high fuel efficiency, upgraded safety and comfort features. The small car offers functionality, and convenience, and is backed by Maruti Suzuki’s trust and reliability. Timely upgrades and updates haven’t gone unnoticed. Being a bestseller, MSIL chose to ensure the Alto is made BS6 compliant in a timely manner. It’s the first entry level car to be made BS6 compliant, coupled with required crash and pedestrian safety regulation.

Maruti Alto 40 lakh
Following launch in 2000, 10 lakh units were reported sold in 2008. The 20 lakh mark was reached in 2012, and 30 lakh milestone in 2016.

While MSIL occupies a majority of seats in the top 10 cars sold list each month, the Alto triumphs with conviction. While the industry laments Covid-19 pandemic related lockdown affects and woes, looking at Alto sales, one would be forgiven for thinking its business as usual. Alto not only managed to sell more cars in this period of turmoil as compared to a year earlier, it also occupied top spot on the list of bestsellers for July 2020.

Last month, Alto sales were reported at 13,654 units, up 17.94 units from 11,577 units sold in July 2019, having gained 2,077 units on volume. MSIL enjoys a dominance in the small car market and WagonR is another such meaningful story for the auto manufacturer.

As Alto continues to be a constant top of the sales chart feature, MSIL continues to make the ownership experience an attractive one. For starters, Alto is available in a range of variants. For the month, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, petrol and CNG variants are available at a collective benefit of 36k – 18k from a cash discount, 15k for exchange offer, and 3k as a corporate discount.
