The 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Though India is the only production base for the Maruti Baleno premium hatchback in the whole world, the 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol variant which is destined for international markets is not being offered in the domestic market.

While the company has not announced any plans to introduce the turbo petrol variant in the future, a recent spotting of the Maruti Baleno Boosterjet test mule in Cochin suggests that it could be on the cards. The test mule was conspicuous by the hidden badges, and black exterior color which is not being offered in India as of now.

The test mule was equipped with side airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system and radar-based autonomous emergency braking system.

The Team-bhp forum member who spotted the test mule remarked that it was being tested in the company of the VW Polo GT TSI. He also noted that the Baleno Boosterjet was equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission (Polo GT TSI is available only with a 7-speed DSG), side airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system and radar-based autonomous emergency braking system.

Maruti could be simply be testing a locally sourced component for the export-spec variant or could be prepping the turbo petrol variant for the Indian roads. If latter turns out to be the case, the Maruti Baleno Boosterjet would target driving enthusiasts with its 110 PS and 170 Nm of torque.
