In a bid to enhance its prospects in the fiercely contested premium hatchback segment, Maruti Baleno could receive a more powerful diesel engine, reports Autocar India. According to the publications sources, Maruti may consider introducing the 90 PS DDiS 200 engine which is found in Ertiga and Ciaz at a later stage.
The DDiS 200 engine produces 15 PS and 10 Nm of torque more than the Baleno’s DDiS 190 by using a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT). The motor would continue to be paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. It remains to be seen whether the higher-spec oil burner would be offered with the SHVS mild hybrid technology or not. With the introduction of a more powerful diesel variant, Maruti would be able to close the power output deficit that its premium hatchback offering has over its rivals.
The Baleno is also offered with a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine which generates 84.5 PS and 115 Nm of torque. The petrol motor can be had either with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.
