The Maruti Baleno has managed to dethrone the segment leader, the Hyundai Elite i20, in the month of December 2015 by selling 10,572 units. However the difference was just 193 units, indicating that there would be a fierce battle between the two premium hatchbacks in the coming months.
Given that the Baleno is being retailed only through Nexa outlets which are less in number when compared to Hyundai’s dealership network, achieving sales leadership in the premium hatchback segment is a commendable feat. In November 2015, the Maruti hatchback lagged behind its primary rival by 1,000 units.
The improved sales performance of the Baleno would serve as a morale boost to the company which slashed the prices of S-Cross compact crossover by up to INR 2.05 lakhs due to lack of demand. The automaker is also gearing up to launch the eagerly anticipated Vitara Brezza compact crossover SUV which is set to take on the likes of Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV100.
In addition to the Vitara Brezza, Auto Expo 2016 will also see the Indian debut of the smaller Ignis crossover which would pick up a fight with the newly launched Mahindra KUV100. The company is hoping that the demand of the Maruti Baleno will continue to be robust in the coming months as well.
