Maruti Alto, Swift, Dzire, Baleno, WagonR, Ertiga BS6 constitute 70% of all petrol sales

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has upgraded 6 of their petrol cars to meet BS6 emission norms, well ahead of the deadline of 1st April 2020. Having achieved this, the automaker claims to be the first OEM to introduce these BS VI complaint vehicles in the mass segment.

The 6 cars which are now offered with BS6 petrol engine are – Alto, Swift, Dzire, Baleno, WagonR, Ertiga. Today, they will launch 7th BS6 car, in the form of XL6. The first car in the company lineup to receive BS6 compliant powertrain was the Baleno premium hatchback in April 2019 following which the engines of the Alto 800, WagonR 1.2 L, Swift, DZire and Ertiga were also upgraded to comply with these norms.

Maruti claims that the of the total petrol cars sold by the company, almost 70% of them are powered by a BS6 engine. The BS VI compliant petrol engines will result in reduction of at least 25 percent in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. These engines have been put through rigorous tests in terms of emissions and performance showing no operational concerns.

Mr. Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, “As a responsible and environment conscious brand, Maruti Suzuki is aligned with Government of India’s vision to introduce BS6 compliant vehicles before April 2020. Seven of our top selling models are BS6 compliant much before the deadline.

We are committed to progressively upgrade our entire range of petrol cars to BS6 technology before stipulated timelines. The BS6 vehicles use Suzuki’s proven technology that helps to substantially reduce the emissions thus contributing to a cleaner and greener environment.”

Maruti will not update their diesel engines to meet BS6 norms, atleast not by 1st April 2020. They plan on waiting for a year, before launching diesel BS6 variants. As per Maruti Suzuki, the BS6 petrol engine can work on a BS4 petrol fuel, but a BS6 diesel engine cannot work with a BS4 diesel fuel. Considering that fuel companies in India are still selling BS4 fuel, the company thinks that it is better to wait for the BS6 fuel to be available first, rather than launching BS6 engine powered cars.

Maruti Suzuki will assess the market for the first 7-8 months after the BS VI emission norms come into effect post which it will introduce BS VI diesel engines on all its cars once noting sufficient demand. The engine which will be updated to BS6 is 1.5 liter diesel. The current 1.3 liter diesel which is used by most Maruti cars, will be discontinued as it is not going to be updated to BS4. Maruti is offering the BS4 diesel engine powered cars with free 5 year / 1 lakh kms warranty.
