The engine is a 800 cc diesel unit, which has been built ground-up by Maruti Suzuki. It is the smallest diesel engine ever produced for a production car by the company. This two cylinder motor will be first seen on Celerio, after which it will be seen powering Maruti’s upcoming LCV, scheduled for launch later this year.

Earlier, Maruti had claimed that this diesel engine of theirs will deliver a mileage of close to 30 kmpl aboard the Celerio. But, new report suggests that it is a bit less. The ARAI certified mileage figure claimed by the report stands at 27.62 kmpl, still good enough to make Celerio diesel as India’s most fuel efficient car. This title currently rests with another Maruti car, Swift DZire, which claims a mileage of 26.59 kmpl.

Speaking about power output, the new Celerio diesel will deliver 47 bhp at 3500 rpm (earlier expected power output figure was at 57-65 hp). This means, that the Celerio diesel will not only be more heavier than the petrol counterpart, but will also deliver 20 PS less power.

Maruti Celerio was first launched in India at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo in February 2014.

Though, the low power output will be compensated a bit by torque output. Compared to Celerio petrol, which delivers 90 Nm torque at 3500 rpm, the Celerio diesel eill deliver 125 Nm torque at just 2000 rpm. This translates into maximum torque delivery at low engine rpm, resulting into decent pickup and acceleration.

Set in to compete with diesel variants of Hyundai Grand i10 and Chevrolet Beat, price of Maruti Celerio diesel will be its USP. Expect price of Celerio diesel to start in the Rs 4.5 lakh range.
