Maruti Celerio with AMT- Automated Manual Transmission will replace A Star in India and compete with the likes of Hyundai i10. AMT is a type of manual transmission that negates use of a clutch while changing gears. In this technology it is an electronic control unit and hydraulic system which act in conjuncture to control clutch and change gears thereby bringing to the fore sequential or automatic shifting of gears.
AMT technology is not only more cost effective but also easier to use, which are the two factors Maruti Suzuki will be banking on when the Celerio makes its debut. Once proved a success, the automakers could also be extending AMT technology into their existing lineup of both hatchbacks and sedans in the future as it is more fuel efficient and cheaper than automatic transmission.
The image you see above, is of Maruti Celerio EZ Drive, which is what the AMT option will be called. Celerio will be seen powered by a 1.0 liter three cylinder K Series engine that also does duty on board Alto K10, A Star and Wagon R. (image via)
