Maruti Ciaz with new 1.5 liter diesel engine – First drive review video

Maruti Ciaz, among the best selling sedans in the country, gets a new 1.5 liter DDiS diesel engine to add another feather in its cap. This diesel engine gets detailed in a new video by Milind Kwatra. In the youtube video, Milind explains in detail how the increase in power has resulted in better performance.

The new 1.5 liter DDiS diesel engine has been developed completely in-house. It complies with new BS VI emission norms and definitely improves power delivery and driveability along with steering feedback in the new Ciaz, which is evident when you drive the car.

The new Ciaz 1.5 liter diesel engine is offered on all three variants of the Ciaz Delta, Zeta and Alpha trims and priced from Rs.9.97 lakhs for the Delta, Rs.11.08 lakhs for the Zeta and Rs.11.37 lakhs for the top end Alpha trim. Though the company has decided to continue selling the Ciaz with the lower powered and older Fiat sourced 1.3 liter diesel engine for the time being, it will be pulled out of production once the BS VI emission norms come into effect as the engine cannot be upgraded to comply with these new regulations.

Ciaz 1.5 liter DDiS, in-line, four cylinder diesel engine, called the DDiS 225 offers 94 bhp power at 4,000 rpm and 225 Nm torque at 1,500-2,500 rpm mated to a new 6 speed transmission. This is a marginal increase of 5.1PS/25Nm over the existing 1.3 litre engine which offers 90PS/200Nm which is called the DDiS200.

The engine offers a high fuel efficiency, though lower than that offered by the older 1.3 liter diesel engine. It is ARAI certified at 26.92 kmpl as against the 28.09 kmpl offered on the 1.3 liter diesel. Although it is 1.17 kmpl lower than the 1.3-litre diesel engine, Ciaz still remains the most efficient mid-size diesel sedan in the segment.

Maruti Suzuki also claims that the new DDiS 225 engine which comes in equipped with a dual-battery hybrid system, offers lower noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels. The motor is an all aluminum unit with optimized compression ratio and dual mass flywheel for smoother drives along with optimum balance of enhanced performance and best in class fuel efficiency.

While Maruti Suzuki has introduced this new 1.5 liter diesel engine on the Ciaz, the same engine will be making its way onto the Ertiga and S-Cross in the near future. By end of this year or early 2020, it will power all diesel cars from Maruti.
