Since its launch, the Ciaz has been a star performer for Maruti Suzuki. The sedan has consistently given stiff competition to both the Honda City & Hyundai Verna (and outnumbered them on multiple occasions). And to ensure that Ciaz is always in the consideration set of all prospective buyers, Maruti has constantly updated the Ciaz. The latest update has come in the list of accessories as now Maruti has included an ‘Auto Trunk Opener’ as an optional accessory.
It is to be noted that an ‘Auto Trunk Opener’ feature is usually found in cars around the INR 25+ lakh mark. Introducing a premium feature in the mid-sized sedan segment is both commendable and unprecedented, especially from Maruti.
The auto-trunk opener can be purchased and installed from any authorized Maruti dealership at a nominal cost of INR 3,390. The trigger mechanism is similar to other devices which work on foot-gesture. The owner needs to move his/her foot under the boot and the trunk lid pops open (provided the car’s key is with the owner at that time).
The feature works out to be very useful when both hands of the owner are occupied and he/she wants to open the boot. As per the company, the accessory can be installed on all cars which were manufactured in 2019. Other owners may check with their nearest Maruti/Nexa dealer if they can get this accessory installed in their cars.
The Ciaz is currently available with two engine options, a 1.5 litre petrol and a 1.5 litre turbocharged diesel motor. Maruti had recently updated the diesel engine configuration by replacing the Fiat sourced 1.3 litre motor by a new indigenously developed 1.5 litre diesel engine.
The petrol motor is offered with two transmission options, a 5 speed MT and a 4-speed AT. The powertrain also gets second generation SHVS mild hybrid technology which helps in saving fuel. The new diesel motor is available only with a single transmission option, a 6-speed MT.
As far as competition is concerned, Ciaz, City and Verna continue to battle it out every month for the top spot while other contenders like VW Vento, Skoda Rapid and Toyota Yaris generally manage sales figures in 3 digits.
