Launched in October 2014, Maruti Ciaz has managed to outsell Honda City in the first month of its launch. Last month, Maruti Ciaz sales surpassed that of Honda City by 1,225 units.
Honda City has been segment leader, registering about 7,000 unit sales since launch in January 2014, peaking 9,518 units in March 2014. But, Honda India, who have had production constraints in the past few months, due to launch of new successful models, had to stopped the production of new City in the month of August. This was due to huge booking order for Maruti Ertiga rivalling MPV – Mobilio. Even now, City production is suffering due to high demand for Mobilio.
On the other hand, Maruti has amassed about 17,000 bookings for their Ciaz sedan. And with probably no production constraints, the country’s largest car maker has managed to sell 6,345 units of Ciaz last month.
Considering that this was Maruti Ciaz’s first full month of sales, and Honda having production constraints, it is still a long way before a clear winner in the segment is decided. As far as market analysts are concerned, they are betting their money on Honda City in the long run. But, this is surely a warning for Honda City and Hyundai Verna, who have enjoyed a Maruti free competition in the segment till now.
Update: Honda has revealed that beginning November 2014, their Tapukara plant will start second shift, there by increasing production of City.
