Thus far, Maruti Suzuki didn’t even make it to top ten in fuel efficiency ranking and we all thought Celerio diesel will be the first to crack. Surprisingly, ARAI has certified Maruti Ciaz diesel’s mileage to be 26.21 km/l, which is took down Honda City by the sheer value after decimal point. Therefore, Honda City diesel can no longer enjoy the branding of being most fuel efficient with 26 kmpl. Even when petrol variants are concerned, Maruti Ciaz has beaten Honda City at 20.73 kmpl against 17.8 kmpl.
We all know claimed mileage figures are only to prove a point on paper, which in recent days seem to be misleading. Manufacturers have started to claim different mileage figures for different variants, in which kerb weight and tire / rim size differ. So these numbers are to be taken for base variant only until it is made clear otherwise.
Whats really intriguing is that Maruti Suzuki Ciaz hosts same diesel motor that it uses in Swift, Ritz, DZire and Ertiga, all of whose mileage claims are far lower. Ciaz being biggest car to use this engine and also one of the biggest in its segment, it is impressive that Maruti managed to achieve said mileage. Question is, will Maruti tweak engines in Swift, Ritz, DZire and Ertiga in their next avatars to output same or better mileage? We have Swift facelift coming soon. Let’s hope so at least for the sake of rising fuel cost.
